Survey reveals majority of Americans don’t support impeachment

A sizeable portion of the left, amplified by the liberal media and arguably led by California Democrat Rep. Maxine “Impeach 45” Waters, are demanding that President Donald Trump be impeached and removed from office as soon as possible.

Unfortunately for them, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans simply don’t support impeachment efforts at this point in time.

A recent poll by Axios and Survey Monkey asked Americans if they believed the claims put forward by former Trump attorney Michael Cohen — who alleged that Trump directed him to buy the silence of two women alleging affairs — and if they’d like to see Congress begin the impeachment process.

Overall, some 64 percent of Americans believed Cohen’s assertions about the payoffs, but only 44 percent believed it was time for Congress to impeach President Trump.

Cohen’s claim believable, still don’t want to impeach

The poll was conducted in the days following Cohen’s recent guilty plea in a deal that included alleged campaign finance violations in relation to the payoffs of the two women during the 2016 campaign. It is worth noting that whether those payments constitute crimes or not is disputed.

An estimated 64 percent of Americans believe that Trump directed Cohen to pay off the women, including 93 percent of Democrats and 66 percent of independents, but only 38 percent of Republicans.

However, on the natural follow-up question about whether Congress should begin the impeachment process, only 44 percent of Americans approved.

That 44 percent included 79 percent of Democrats and 49 percent of independents, but only 8 percent of Republicans. It is worth noting that Democrats would need a substantial portion of Republicans to support impeachment if they wish to successfully remove Trump from office.

Black women and millennials

Axios broke down the poll results into five key voter subgroups: Black women, millennials (voters aged 18-34), white suburban women, “NeverHillary” independents and rural voters.

Only among black women and millennials is the topic of impeachment a popular one, as 73 percent and 56 percent, respectively, of those groups favored the start of the impeachment process.

Only 42 percent of white suburban women, 35 percent of “NeverHillary” independents and 36 percent of rural voters were in favor of removing Trump from office right now.

Experts and pundits have repeatedly noted that Democrats will not only need a significant portion of Republicans on board to impeach Trump, but also a sizeable majority of white suburban women and substantial portions of the other groups as well. According to this poll, Democrats lack that support, so, sorry Rep. Waters, but the people simply aren’t with you on impeaching Trump right now.
