Democrat congressional candidate vows to impeach Justice Clarence Thomas if elected

Still insisting that President Donald Trump’s election was “illegitimate,” certain Democrats are taking great exception to his constitutionally-authorized reshaping of the judiciary through the nomination and confirmation of conservative originalist jurists to the various federal courts.

Some Democrats aren’t content with merely opposing a more conservative-leaning judiciary and are actively plotting to undermine and reverse the trend, with one Democrat candidate even calling for the impeachment and removal from the bench of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Justice Thomas targeted

Believing Trump’s presidency to be “illegitimate,” many on the left viewed his appointment of Justice Neil Gorsuch as also illegitimate. The same holds true for the impending nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh, which Democrats are futilely trying to block or delay.

But now Justice Thomas, a sitting Supreme Court justice who has nothing to do with Trump, has also come under fire, at least in the mind of Democrat Massachusetts congressional candidate Barbara L’Italien, who wants to oust Justice Thomas from the high court over the Anita Hill scandal from nearly three decades ago.

Politico reported that L’Italien, who currently serves as a state senator in Massachusetts, has made addressing sexual assault claims a key focal point of her campaign, and Justice Thomas and President Trump are high atop her list of men who need to be investigated and removed from office for such misconduct.

“There is an elephant in the room for Congress in the #MeToo era. Our leaders have to start talking about it. Two of the most powerful men in the country have been credibly accused of sexual crimes and gotten away with it,” L’Italien said.

“Laws cracking down on sexual assault have to be signed by a president who multiple women say assaulted them. Regulations to stop sexual harassment can be struck down by a Supreme Court justice who lied under oath to counter allegations of sexual harassment. Why would victims think a government like that is looking out for them?” she added.

Impeachment for perjury

Justice Thomas underwent grueling confirmation hearings for his seat on the bench in 1991, during which he was accused of sexually harassing a woman named Anita Hill.

Thomas survived the attacks and smears on his character and was ultimately confirmed to the court, but L’Italien insists there is “considerable evidence that Thomas lied under oath” about his conduct with regard to Hill.

Therefore, she has promised to file impeachment charges for perjury against Thomas and lead a charge to remove him from the bench if she is elected to serve in Congress.

If Justice Thomas committed perjury during his confirmation hearings in 1991, Democrats have had ample time to raise the issue and take action against the jurist. The fact that this hasn’t been an issue until now — when Trump is on the verge of securing a conservative majority to the Supreme Court — is quite telling.

Democrats are apoplectic that Trump is able to reshape the judiciary in a more conservative direction, as that undermines their efforts to legislate from the bench with liberal activist judges. That they are even considering the impeachment of sitting Supreme Court justices shows just how desperate they are.
