Democrat congressional candidate accuses opponent of waging ‘war on public schools’

If it weren’t for double standards, some Democratic politicians would have no standards at all.

That includes North Carolina congressional candidate Dan McCready, who recently accused his Republican opponent of attacking the public school system — even as the Democrat’s own children are enrolled in an expensive private institution.

“War on schools”

The Daily Caller reported that McCready’s hypocritical statements came during a candidate’s forum hosted by the Fayetteville NAACP — an event that was not attended by the Democrat’s opponent, Republican state Sen. Dan Bishop.

Those men are scheduled to face off against each other in a special election on Sept. 10 to fill the vacant Ninth Congressional District seat in North Carolina. Allegations of cheating had resulted in the 2018 election for that seat being thrown out in favor of a re-do, albeit with a different Republican candidate this time around.

McCready prefaced his attack on Bishop by sharing the story of a substitute teacher he had met who had allegedly seen her rate of pay decline from $14 per hour to $10 per hour, despite having served as a substitute teacher for 14 years.

The Democratic candidate attributed that reduction in pay to a supposed “war on schools” led by Republicans like Bishop and Trump administration Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, among others.

“This is what these politicians like state Sen. Bishop do,” McCready said. “They don’t believe in public schools. They do anything they can to conduct a war on schools. And don’t get me started on Betsy DeVos… I think these people are doing everything they can to make people’s lives worse.”

Later, McCready added: “We’ve got to stop this war on public schools.”

The truth

But there’s one problem with McCready’s self-righteous portrayal of himself as a defender of public schools: McCready’s own children, who range in age from 2 to 10 years old, are not enrolled in them. His children attend a prestigious and expensive private Christian school in Charlotte.

That school, Trinity Episcopal School, reportedly charges tuition of upwards of $18,000 per year per student. McCready also reportedly served on the board of Trinity Episcopal prior to launching his congressional bid in 2017.

For its part, McCready’s campaign has tried to downplay the hypocrisy.

“As a product of North Carolina public schools, Dan McCready believes in public education and ending the attacks on our public schools by people like State Senator Dan Bishop and [Education Secretary] Betsy DeVos,” spokesman Matthew Fried said in a statement to The Daily Caller. “He and his wife chose to send their kids to a small Christian school to receive a faith-based education, and they find it shameful that politician Dan Bishop is attacking their kids.”
