Trump says he doesn’t know identity of ‘whistleblower’

More and more information about the so-called “whistleblower” who lodged a complaint over President Donald Trump’s July phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky is coming to light, and it seems almost inevitable that the individual’s identity will soon be known — whether Democrats want that to happen or not.

President Trump denied on Thursday having any knowledge at this time of the identity of the “whistleblower” as he continued to defend his “perfect” phone call with Zelensky, the Washington Examiner reported.

What we know about the “whistleblower”

The anonymous “whistleblower” first filed their complaint in August, though the controversy over Ukraine didn’t erupt publicly until later in September. House Democrats quickly seized on it as a basis to begin an impeachment inquiry.

So far, the media reports that the “whistleblower” was a CIA analyst assigned at one point to the National Security Council in the White House.

It has also been reported that the individual is a registered Democrat and had a prior working relationship with a prominent Democratic politician who just so happens to be running for president in 2020.

It has since been reported separately by the Examiner that the Democratic presidential candidate in question is none other than former Vice President Joe Biden, according to government and intelligence sources. The “whistleblower” is reportedly an expert on Ukraine who would have worked alongside Biden when he took the lead in the Obama administration on Ukraine policy.

Trump denies knowing “whistleblower” identity

During a brief press gaggle outside the White House ahead of his trip to Minnesota, Trump was asked if he knew the whistleblower’s name. “I don’t know,” Trump replied.

“But,” he continued, “I know the whistleblower has been very inaccurate because when we released the transcript of the conversation that I had with the President of Ukraine, who — frankly, today, was very good; somewhere in Ukraine, I guess, gave a news conference on unrelated things — was asked a question, and he said, ‘President Trump behaved in a perfectly fine manner. There was nothing wrong in any way, shape, or form.’ Something to that effect. So, I appreciate that.”

“But the President of Ukraine, that should be case over, because the President of Ukraine said that the call was absolutely fine. I think he said that it resembled very much — and he remembered it — it was just like the transcript,” Trump added. “Now, the transcript is a perfect transcript. There shouldn’t be any further questions. But the President of Ukraine just made that statement, so that’s good.”

Identity should be revealed

Later, in response to a question about Energy Secretary Rick Perry being subpoenaed by Congress to testify about his role with regard to Ukraine, Trump again referenced the “whistleblower.” He noted how ridiculous it was that Democrats are so obsessed about a phone call for which the transcript had already been released.

“How many people can they talk to? We had a simple conversation. Everybody knows what the conversation was because I gave it immediately when I heard about it,” Trump said. “The whistleblower, who seems to be a Democrat that’s involved with a lot of people, gave a false interpretation of the conversation because we have the conversation.”

As for the identity of the anonymous “whistleblower,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday, “The Whistleblower’s facts have been so incorrect about my ‘no pressure’ conversation with the Ukrainian President, and now the conflict of interest and involvement with a Democrat Candidate, that he or she should be exposed and questioned properly.”
