Rep. Jerry Nadler pushes forward with ‘formal impeachment proceedings’

Make sure to let us know what you think... we now have comments turned ON below the article!

The liberal voter base and numerous rank and file elected Democrats — not to mention a few senior party leaders — have been champing at the bit to launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump since they took control of the House in 2018.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has studiously attempted to rein in her party and halt the rush to impeachment at the same time, but that effort appears to have been an exercise in futility, as a senior Democrat leader in the House has ignored Pelosi’s stated preference and is pressing forward toward the overarching goal of removing Trump from office.

Defying Pelosi

New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee officially launched what he called “formal impeachment proceedings” against the president earlier this month.

In Nadler’s view, it is all rather straightforward — his committee has been tasked to investigate and pursue any alleged wrongdoing by the president, and should sufficient evidence of such be found, his committee is where an actual impeachment process would begin…therefore, his committee has, for all intents and purposes, begun the impeachment proceedings merely by conducting an inquiry.

However, this move by Nadler flies directly in the face of the caution Pelosi has been urging against initiating an insufficient, premature or weak attempt at impeaching Trump

Given Pelosi’s sharp political instincts, her political calculus on the matter has likely revealed that a failed impeachment would serve to grow and solidify the president’s base, demoralize the left and effectively ensure Trump’s re-election in 2020.

Nadler pushes forward

It would seem that Nadler lacks the same sort of political foresight possessed by Pelosi, however, as the chairman indicated during a recent appearance on CNN that, all semantic games aside, his committee was indeed working toward an impeachment of the president he hoped would be fully underway by the fall.

Asked directly about Speaker Pelosi’s position on the matter, Nadler declared that he wasn’t “waiting on anything” or any sort of final approval from her, and in fact claimed that she was “cooperative” with his efforts to get impeachment proceedings fully underway.

Nadler revealed that much of the impeachment effort will be centered around testimony he hopes to compel — either willingly or via subpoena — from former White House Counsel Don McGahn.

He also seemingly dismissed the findings of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report by suggesting there was ample evidence contained therein of “collusion” with Russia and obstruction of justice…two fundamental things Mueller’s report utterly failed to establish.

Looking beyond collusion

The chairman also made clear that, aside from the lingering questions of collusion and obstruction, his committee would also be looking for potential violations of the Constitution’s emoluments clause, the alleged “hush money” payments made by Trump to keep extramarital affairs quiet, and other potential “quid pro quos” that he believes benefited Trump at the expense of the nation.

It has already been argued at length that Pelosi has lost the firm grasp on power she once had and is in essence only a figurehead leader of her party at present. Given the way in which the far-left progressives have highjacked the Democrats’ agenda, and now Nadler’s defiant push toward impeachment despite the speaker’s warnings, Pelosi’s faltering grip has become more obvious than ever.
