Mike Pence defends Trump amid Ukraine scandal: They ‘elected us to drain the swamp’

Democrats have been trying to pull Vice President Mike Pence into the now-infamous Ukraine “scandal” since word first got out about the so-called “whistleblower” complaint against President Donald Trump — and now, Pence is fighting back.

In a move that shows he won’t let this controversy drive a wedge between himself and the president, Pence came out in defense of Trump this week, according to Breitbart. The vice president maintained that there was nothing wrong with Trump’s call for an investigation into possible wrongdoing by Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

“In 2016, the American people elected President Trump and I for many reasons: [to] get the economy moving again, to rebuild our military, but they also elected us to drain the swamp,” Pence told the Arizona Republic.

Draining the swamp

Pence’s comments came during a trip to Arizona earlier this week. The VP was there in support of Republican Sen. Martha McSally’s 2020 re-election bid, but he fielded questions from the media about the Ukraine scandal in the meantime.

Speaking with reporters, Pence said Trump was absolutely right to request that Ukraine provide any and all necessary assistance to the U.S. as authorities look closer at allegations of corruption by the Bidens.

“The American people have the right to know if the vice president of the United States or his family profited from his position as vice president during the last administration,” Pence said. “That’s about looking backward and understanding what really happened.”

The Trump-hating left has insinuated that Pence is involved in the “scandal” due to the fact that he has personally met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but Pence assured reporters that his discussion with Zelensky was focused on “real issues of corruption in Ukraine” and the need for U.S. taxpayers to be reassured that federal aid money is going to a country that’s “free of corruption.”

“Those were the topics we discussed,” Pence said. “And that was all we discussed. The simple truth is that those are the same issues that the president raised with President Zelensky during that call.”

Getting to the bottom of it

Turning his attention to Democrats and their recent push for impeachment, Pence then noted that we’ve seen this all before.

“This is just more of the same of what we’ve seen from Democrats over the last two and a half years,” Pence lamented. “These endless investigations should end in Washington, D.C.”

He went on to say that possible corruption by the Bidens is “an issue the American people are entitled to know more about and to get to the bottom of and get to the facts of.”

Of course, the left-leaning media and political establishment would like nothing better than to see Pence either become embroiled in the Ukraine controversy himself or decide to abandon President Trump and leave him to the impeachment-hungry wolves — but it appears that Pence is standing strong alongside the president and not giving the left what it so desperately wants. Good on him.
