Michelle Obama takes thinly-veiled swipes at Trump in Essence Festival interview

Despite being elected twice to the highest political office in the land — not to mention receiving glowing coverage from the liberal media and the adoration of at least half the country — former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have seemingly retained a rather large chip of racial resentment on their shoulders.

This fact was evident during an interview of the former first lady with CBS This Morning co-host Gayle King in which Mrs. Obama took swipes at President Donald Trump and offered divisive commentary on a range of racial topics.

“Barack made it look easy”

The interview took place at the Essence Festival in New Orleans on Saturday, and the conversation at one point turned to the topic of the presidency and the personal qualities necessary to do the job well.

“It’s a hard job, y’all,” Obama said of the presidency prior to taking a shot at Trump without actually saying his name. “This isn’t a joke, this isn’t a game — the leader of the free world with a tweet can start a war, can crush an economy, can change the future of our children.”

She then described the sorts of qualities she viewed as being necessary for a good president — presumably possessed by her husband Barack — asserting that the job required “deep seriousness and focus,” an understanding of history, “having facts, operating with a clear base of facts and ideas,” and being “someone who is careful with their words, somebody is who is trustworthy, someone who is loyal and honest.”

Obama suggested that some people view politics as some sort of “game” and said, “I fear at times Barack made it look easy — I guess it’s kind of like if the black guy can do it, anybody can do it…and that’s not true. It’s a hard job.”

“Angry black woman”

The former first lady repeatedly played the race card at different points in the interview and — apparently forgetful of the incredibly soft and fawning media coverage she and Barack received — implying that she’d never been given the benefit of the doubt by anybody, even by her fellow Democrats.

“I would have to earn my grace and I knew I would have to quickly define myself and I want all young girls out there to know — we all struggle with that, people of color, working-class folks, women of color — people try to define us in a negative way before we get a chance to get out there and tell our own stories,” she said.

“For a minute there, I was an angry black woman who was emasculating her husband,” Obama said as she harkened back to the 2008 campaign and early days of the presidency. “As I got more popular, that’s when people of all sides — Democrats and Republicans — tried to take me out by the knees and the best way to do it was to focus on the one thing people were afraid of: the strength of a black woman,” she added.

How soon they forget

As previously noted, Barack and Michelle Obama enjoyed exceptionally deferential and uncritical coverage from the predominately liberal establishment media designed to give the impression that the former first couple could do no wrong.

Not only that, but mainstream outlets regularly bent over backward, often casting journalistic ethics aside, to defend Barack and Michelle when things they said or did were dishonest or, in some cases, downright scandalous.

The same can not be said, quite obviously, in relation to Donald and Melania Trump, who are the subject of excessively negative and overtly hostile media coverage at every turn. If anybody has a right to feel resentful in that regard, it is the current first lady and not the former.
