Dr. Marc Siegel says Joe Biden’s recent gaffes are ‘really concerning’

Democratic primary frontrunner Joe Biden has a long history of gaffes, but it seems his slip-ups have increased in number in recent months, and with the former vice president’s advanced age in mind, more and more people are raising questions about Biden’s mental health — including Fox News chief medical correspondent Marc Siegel.

In an appearance on Tucker Carlson Tonight on Thursday, Dr. Siegel dismissed concerns about Biden’s bloody eye incident at a Wednesday town hall for CNN, but said Biden’s recent gaffes — and moments of forgetfulness — are “really concerning,” The Daily Wire reports.

The doctor is in

Siegel prefaced his talk on Thursday by noting that he isn’t Biden’s physician and hasn’t had the opportunity to examine him — but based on what he’s seen in media reports, he had some insight into what may be ailing the front-running candidate.

With respect to Biden’s bloody eye, Siegel said that was most likely a “subconjunctival hemorrhage” — essentially a leaking blood vessel beneath the eye — which, while “dramatic” and nothing pleasant to look at, is “most of the time” harmless.

Biden’s increasing forgetfulness, on the other hand, is a matter of concern for the doctor. Siegel expressed fear that Biden’s recent gaffes could be indicative of diminished mental capabilities, particularly in terms of “thinking, orientation, and memory.”

“The other clip you showed, Tucker, where he appeared confused, that’s been happening in increasing amount[s], where he seems to forget what state he’s in or the timeline of the Parkland school shooting,” Siegel told host Tucker Carlson. “Things like that are really concerning to me and, again, I don’t know the answer to why that’s happening.”

Breaking it down

One potential explanation offered up by the doctor is Biden’s 1988 surgery to have brain aneurysms clipped. According to Siegel, physicians have since “developed a new technique to do that” that prevents some negative side effects of the procedure, which could include “cognitive changes.”

“I’m not necessarily talking about [Biden in particular],” Siegel said, but in people who have had similar procedures, “down the line, you can see quite often cognitive changes — problems with thinking, problems with concentration, problems with orientation.”

Siegel went on to say that while we don’t know if that’s true of Biden, he’s still “concerned.”

“That’s on my mind that that’s something that might be something we would consider,” the doctor said. “We don’t know if it’s true in his case, but I am seeing what looks like could be problems with thinking, orientation, and memory.”

Both Dr. Siegel and Carlson shared that they’re sympathetic to Biden and wish him nothing but the best — but, being bluntly honest, the best thing for Biden might just be dropping out of the race before his perceived mental capabilities become a bigger issue than they already are.
