Hillary Clinton calls Eleanor Roosevelt ‘gutsy’ for standing by unfaithful husband

Failed presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is back in the public eye again, promoting a new book while fielding softball questions teed-up to attack President Donald Trump in friendly media interviews.

In a television segment that aired on Sunday morning, Clinton credited former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt for having been a big inspiration in her life and drew parallels between Roosevelt and herself over the shared experience of marital infidelity.

Hillary Clinton inspired by Eleanor Roosevelt

Fox News reported that Clinton sat down alongside co-author and daughter Chelsea Clinton for an interview with Jane Pauley that aired on CBS Sunday Morning which was also designed to promote the imminent release of their upcoing project, The Book of Gutsy Women.

The CBS piece opened and closed with the Clinton women admiring a memorial statue of Roosevelt in a Manhattan park and praising the former first lady for her strength and perseverance.

“When I ended up being first lady, she was one of the people that most inspired me because of how she tried to keep thinking about those who were left out, left behind, marginalized,” Clinton said of Roosevelt.

Marital parallels

Pauley keyed in on a passage in the book about a reported pre-presidency extramarital affair involving Franklin D. Roosevelt and a secretary that his wife had hired for him. The divorce had been considered but rejected, and Clinton had written that it was a “gutsy decision” for Eleanor to stay by her unfaithful husband’s side.

“Part of the reason I admire Eleanor Roosevelt is the way she handled that happening to her, and me,” Clinton said. “I say look when something happens in your marriage — as I know well — it can be gutsy to leave, it can be gutsy to stay.

“I felt like I had learned so much from her that I wanted to share that with the reader,” she added. Asked for view on the inclusion of the infidelity in the book, Chelsea simply replied, “It’s her story to tell.”

Lingering electoral bitterness

No interview of Hillary Clinton would be complete without a rehash of the 2016 election and how she still believes she was robbed by President Trump of a rightful electoral victory.

Clinton flatly asserted: “I believe he knows he’s an illegitimate president. He knows.

“He knows that there were a bunch of different reasons why the election turned out the way it did, and I take responsibility for the parts of it that I should, but Jane, it was like applying for a job and getting 66 million letters of recommendation and losing to a corrupt human tornado,” Clinton said. “And so I know that he knows that this wasn’t on the level.

“I don’t know that we’ll ever know everything that happened, but clearly we know a lot and are learning more every day and history will probably sort it all out,” she added. “So of course he’s obsessed with me, and I believe it’s a guilty conscience, so much as he has a conscience.”
