DC divorce filing alleges affair between Rep. Ilhan Omar and married political consultant

Democrat Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar has received plenty of scrutiny over her suspicious and secretive marital history, but now a new wrinkle has been added to the story in the form of allegations that she engaged in an affair with a married man, ultimately causing that man’s wife to file for divorce.

A doctor in Washington claimed in court filings that her husband, a D.C.-based political consultant, left her and their 13-year-old son to pursue a relationship with controversial congresswoman Omar.

Affair alleged in court filings

The New York Post reported that 55-year-old Dr. Beth Mynett filed papers in D.C. Superior Court seeking a divorce from her 38-year-old husband, political consultant Tim Mynett, alleging that she was dumped in April when her now-estranged husband made a “shocking declaration of love” for Rep. Omar.

The Mynetts have a 13-year-old son together and were married in 2012 after having lived together for six years prior to that.

It is unclear exactly when the affair between Mynett and Omar began, but it may have commenced after Mynett began working as a consultant for Omar’s campaign and then her congressional office.

Regardless, the court filings claim that he informed his wife of the affair and his love for Omar on April 7, and despite his wife’s protestations and her plea to save the marriage, Tim Mynett reportedly said that “was not an option” and moved out the next day.

Dr. Mynett is seeking sole custody of the couple’s son as well as ownership of their D.C. home, child support, and payment of all legal fees incurred in the divorce proceeding.

Consultant paid $230K by Omar campaign

One of the reasons Dr. Mynett is seeking sole custody of the child is due to her estranged husband’s “extensive travel” as part of his job with Omar — travel that doesn’t exactly align with his job description as a mere political consultant.

According to the court documents, “Defendant’s more recent travel and long work hours now appear to be more related to his affair with Rep. Omar than with his actual work commitments.”

Dr. Mynett alleged that, in addition to the extensive travel, she has also lost all faith and trust in her husband with regard to caring for the child, and cited as an example the fact that her husband introduced their son to Omar and even invited her into the family home while she was out of town.

As for those “work commitments,” Mynett’s consulting firm, known as E Street Group, has reportedly received at least $230,000 in payments from Omar’s campaign since August 2018 for things such as fundraising consulting, digital communications, internet advertising and plenty of travel expenses.

Interestingly, it was reported just a few months back that Omar had split with her husband Ahmed Hirsi and was seeking a divorce from him, right about the same time that photos of Omar and Mynett in public began to surface in some media outlets. It will be even more interesting to see how — if at all — this alleged homewrecking on the part of Omar will play with her Muslim constituents back in Minneapolis, her base of supporters on the left, and the general public at large.
